We cannot understand the present if we do not know the past and we cannot anticipate the future if we do not understand the relentless realities of geography and economy. In the age of AI these latter two have become even more acutely important, where diverse and globally scattered resources and access to them have become vital national interests and international choke points at the same time. During the first day of this seminar, we will delve deep into these realities as they are at present, yet very little seen, let alone properly understood.

The United States is not the only country that aims for global dominance, whether it is in economic, military or technological terms. From the vantage point of the until recently undisputed role of America as the only remaining superpower it is easy to miss the many important details on how other – lesser – powers are striving for the same, either through their own economic, military and technological clout, such as China, or through building new alliances that are meant to produce a counterweight to the United States, such as BRICS or more recently the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement. The AI race is increasingly supercharging this process, where the political mantra of the day is to be there sooner, sounding very much like the nuclear arms race at its height during the Cold War. During the morning sessions we will analyze in-depth these developments and how they are already impacting all levels of daily life in the United States.

Beyond the shrill headlines and one-sided superficial reporting, leaders in government, the military, business and civil society urgently need comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the multi-layered dynamics at work in geopolitics today. You cannot change the origins and workings of geopolitical risk, but you can define how you and your organization will respond to it when it comes to pass.
